JOB DESCRIPTION
PLAYGROUND SUPERVISOR AND EXTENDED CARE TEACHER
*Minimum Qualifications*: MN Rules, Parts 9503.

_ *Hours*: Most afternoons, one morning, and opportunities to sub in the classroom, following the CDM School Calendar year.
Responsibilities begin one week before the school year begins, and ends the last day of school, or as needed.
*Reports To*: Program Director *Takes Direction From*: Administrative Lead Teacher *Desirable Qualifications*: Montessori training, certification and experience; experience in Early Childhood Education Setting.
*DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:* * Create a safe, enriching environment that is conducive and complements the teachings of the Montessori philosophy.
_*Children are never to be left unattended and the 10 children to 1 teacher ratio are to be maintained*_*.
* * Offer encouragement, comfort, consolation and the nurturing of children, guiding them toward self-responsibility, self-control and respect for themselves and others.
Provide crisis intervention and conflict.
* Prepare the children’s learning environment so that it will be ready and attractive for the children by the new student orientation (usually the last week of August).
* Observe each child individually and guide the child through the prepared materials and environment.
In the Montessori tradition, this involves nurturing the development of the whole child—physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally and spiritually, while allowing each child the freedom to explore at his/her own speed and according to his/her own capacities and interests.
Program content should compliment these objectives.
* Maintain an inventory listing and be responsible for all materials in the Extended Care Community.
Supervise the weekly dusting and cleaning of these materials to insure they are clean, neat and attractive.
Create new materials to engage children in their unique areas of interest, levels of accomplishment and methods of learning.
* Keep an itemization of your community expenditures and do not exceed your budgeted allowance.
Communicate community supply needs to the Office Manager or purchase and complete expense forms for reimbursement.
* Report impending capital equipment and materials replacement needs to the Executive Director, flagging items as priority that are worn or that have missing pieces.
* Maintain a cordial caring relationship with the children’s parents and communicate observations about a child to his/her parent/s when appropriate.
* Assist co-workers in retaining records on the progress, problems, or concerns of each child and communicate your observations with child’s primary Montessori Lead Teacher.
Fill out form of your concerns for all other issues and communication or route to the Executive Director or as outlined in the school’s Emergency Succession Plan in the event of a temporary or unplanned absence of the Executive Director.
* Implement policies communicated by the Executive Director or Board of Director’s as outlined in the school’s Emergency Succession Plan in the event of a temporary or unplanned absence.
* Establish and ensure an atmosphere of safety, trust and consistency through the implementation of reasonable rules and expectations for the children.
Ensure that there are no physical safety hazards in the space or on the playground used by the children, and provide crisis intervention and conflict resolution when needed.
* Encourage and welcome assistance from parents in projects for the community or school.
* Attend staff meetings and lead teacher meetings when applicable.
* Keep a checkout log in the Extended Care Programs and verify children in your care when going out and coming in from the playground*.
* * Report any issues for maintaining the 10 to 1 ratio, i.
e.
late arrive of a staff member or a substitute, to the director or if not available, the extended care lead staff (see the chain of lead staff attached).
* Supervise activity and assure the children’s compliance with Playground Rules and Guidelines for Support Staff (attached).
* When you are outside supervising children on the playground, staff must spread out to insure the proper coverage.
Communicate with other staff only when it is important to pass on information about the activities or the care of the children you are supervising.
* When there are visual barriers on the playground a staff member needs to walk the perimeter to insure that all children have safely returned to the building.
* Provide lunchtime supervision of children consistent with school guidelines as assigned.
* Never dismiss a child to the care of someone other than authorized parent or guardian.
Check the Extended Day board for authorized parent substitutions for the day and verify with picture ID when they arrive to pick up a child.
Call parents whenever you question identity or do not have authorization.
* Attend seminars and conferences as needed for licensing certification and professional development.
In-service training hours must be equal to1 to 2 percent (dependent on classification) of paid work hours during the year_*.
If you do not know your classification contact the Executive Director.
*_ * In case of illness or absence, initiate contact for a substitute.
In cases of emergency, request assistance from teaching partner or other staff to ensure that community is adequately staffed.
* Follow mandatory reporting procedures regarding child abuse, neglect or exploitation of children, according to Minnesota Statute 626.

* Follow licensing guidelines for Minnesota Department of Health and Human Services, including maintaining CPR and First Aid Certifications as required.
* Prepare and submit CDM reports of injury, critical incident, separation, medication administration, and leave forms when necessary.
* Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed.
